As an adult it can be hard to think that at one point in our lives we didn't know what colors were, we had no idea that the grass was green and the sky was blue, the sun was yellow and tree trunks were brown, it's funny to think that at one stage we didn't even know what color hair we had! One of the many responsibilities we assume as parents is teaching our children about colors. There is a wealth of color in the rainbow and as parents, we have to help our children see it. Learning which colors are which is the most basic and fundamental benefit to coloring books, the main downside to them however is how quickly the costs can mount up when your child is going through a coloring book a week, although this doesn't need to be an issue for those with computers, Internet connections and a printer, you can find a wealth of free coloring pages online that can be any number of pictures and styles.

Looking back over years of free coloring pages, you can really see how your child progresses. They may at first use colors on a whim. A beautiful purple sea will emerge with orange apples growing on a tree nearby. Their coloring will start out haphazard and outside of the line. They will likely not have the patience to color an entire page. But as time goes on, you will see their improvement. They begin to understand that the sky is blue and the grass is green. Their coloring becomes neater over time. Collecting and keeping their coloring is a great way to see how they grow in ability with each passing year. What is great about this is they will be enjoying themselves as they do it, coloring is fun after all! It is also helpful to point out the colors and their names as your child is selecting crayons. Stories with a moral are great to share with your children. This is an added benefit to going over colors with them and teaching them which colors go with which object.
